Ta Prohm

After Angkor Wat we had some lunch, were entertained by a pretty sharp young boy vendor who had a very clever sales approach by talking with us first, impressing us with his knowledge of Obama and the geography of the US that he enticed us into buying some bracelets. (You have to give some of them credit.)

After that we headed over to Ta Prohm in the Angkor Thom complex. This one does nothing but evoke the power of the jungle and all its life here.

Yes, this is also where the movie ‘Tomb Raider’ was filmed.

Anyway- this temple definitely left an impression. The number of enormous trees that greet you when you first walk in; and then seeing just how large the roots of these trees that have taken over and intertwined within the ancient structures is a pretty interesting sight for the eyes to see. This one was built in 1186, and was supposedly dedicated to the mother of JayavarmanVII. “It is one of the few temples in the region where an inscription provides information about the temple’s dependents and inhabitants.” “It says that close to 80,000 people were required to maintain or attend the temple, among them more than 2700 officials and 615 dancers.”

After this temple we headed back into town for some rest and some food. The following morning we went to Bayon.
