Mango Mania – April 30

Okay—kind of a lame title.

But we literally have mangos coming out of our ears. Well- not really but almost. Yes, the blooms have turned into fruit, and yes, they are finally ripe and they’re everywhere. 2 of the 3 trees IN OUR YARD have ripe mangos on them and our host family is stuffing them down our throats. For the last 3 days we have gotten a basket full of about 10-12 of them that I think that they think is our duty to eat!

Actually they are really quite delicious and do taste really pretty good – you know, sweet, sweet juice dripping down your forearms good. But at the same time – 6 a day is a bit much to ask! It’s almost beginning to feel like a chore! I shouldn’t complain, because they’re only round this time of year –so I spose we ought to enjoy them. But everything in moderation right? Not only does our host family give them to us; but our co-teachers do too….. AND we just got a bag full from the neighbor kids that study English here. I don’t know if it’s some kind of inside joke “hey, let’s give them to the foreigners…they’ll eat them” or if it’s some sort of race to get rid of your batch first; but there’s no doubt about a surplus. I wish I could send some home for you to try – as they are treat; not to mention we could rid our pile of them a bit faster; but I think USPS has rules on sending fruit overseas. Anyhow, mango anyone?

Have you guys tried the Mango dip? I can't remember what all goes in it... but it's shredded mango that isn't quite ripe. Add some salt, spice and other stuff and you eat it with your rice and meat. You'll have to ask your host mom if there is such a thing, but my mom makes it all the time when mangos are cheap at the grocery store. Wish I could be eating some mangos with you guys!
