Wat Phnom – Phnom Penh

“Is on top of the only hill in town, which is 27m tall. According to legend the first pagoda built here was in 1373. But the sanctuary was rebuilt in 1434, 1806, 1894 & 1926. Nowadays, many people come to pray for good luck, success in exams or business affairs. When their prayers are answered, he or she must return to make the offering promised, such as garlands of jasmine flowers or bunches of bananas which the spirits are especially fond of. There is a stupa containing the ashes of King Ponhea Yat (1405-67).”

Like all tourists spots in this country, there are of course many vendors selling this that and the other thing. There are even children selling birds that are in a cage; supposedly if you pay to set one free you’ll have good karma. (Locals say not to do it, as the birds are trained to fly back to the cage eventually.)
