Cleaver...

Is the newest member of our family (besides of course the exciting news we got last week that Will’s sister and her husband had their first baby girl, Maysa; which far out trumps our newest member and we are very excited to be new aunties and uncles again, and it’s probably not fair to even consider mentioning her in this same post) nonetheless, the newest addition for us on this side of the globe is our little guppy fish, named Cleaver. Beautifully finned in bright orange scales, he swims about our water holding tank (yes, the one we use for laundry), looking for mosquito larvae to feed on.

Yep, that’s right – this lil dood is supposed to eat mosquito larvae, which ideally in the long run will cut down on the amount of mosquitoes hanging round our yard. Apparently this is a very effective way of controlling the mosquito population in this part of the world. So many people have open water tanks around their household, and mosquito larvae love to hang out on the water; in fact I believe they need to hang out on water in order to continue to grow. In this part of the world mosquito borne diseases like Malaria and Dengue Fever are huge concerns for people and anything that can be done to prevent the mosquito population from getting out of control is done and encouraged. We shall see how it goes. He has survived the last five nights with us. I usually check on him every morning, making sure he’s not belly up. Plus I kinda like to watch those big, flowy, dramatic fins swim around and dance through the water.

Ahh the life of a fish.
