So to round out the last two months at site, I’ve decided to do a world map project mural at our school. I’ve got about twenty interested students, so that should make the daunting task move along. We’ve got the background ocean blue already painted on. The map itself is 2.8 meters tall by 5.6 meters wide. Today we finished drawing the grid onto the wall (we’ll be using the grid-method to enlarge the map onto the wall) and starting tomorrow, we’ll start the tedious process of drawing all the countries on. I’m curious to see how it’ll go…I guess there’s only one way to find out!!! I’ve got some dedicated kids though, and most of them are pretty good at drawing, so I feel pretty good about that.
Anyway, yesterday, I was in the teacher’s lounge, and our deputy school director (who knows VERY little English, and can mutter out a few sentences here and there) came up to me and said, “Stephanie..” I said, “Yes,….” He said (in a very concerned and serious, but innocent voice), “Does…will,..I mean.. does (keep in mind the English language has many ways of forming the beginning of a question and, yes it’s confusing, and they feel embarrassed if they can’t get it right)…will the world, …does the map of the world…….will it include Cambodia??” I could tell the honest concern in his voice,……. and in the most reassuring tone I could offer, I replied, “Yes, Mr. Ruun, the world map will include Cambodia” and gave him a big smile and immediately thereafter I could see the relief on his face. I think he could see the effort we were putting in to prepare for the map, and he just wanted to make sure his country was going to be on there. Who could blame him, right?
